Lawrence E. Hughes served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1969 to 1982. He served on the Rules Committee, Reference Committee, as a ranking member of Highways and Highway Safety Committee, and was a member of the Interstate Cooperation Committee, on which he also served as secretary.
He also served the city of Columbus on the Downtown Capital Square Commission, was listed in Who's Who in Politics, was a member of the Aladdin Shrine, American Legion, Honorary Kentucky Colonel, Charter President Downtown Civitan Club, Past President of S.A.D. Alumi, member of Si U Fraternity, and Christian Athletes Assocation.
Lawrence E. Hughes died on September 1, 2000.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board took over the care of the Statehouse and its collections in 1988.
