Wearing a billowing garment and the accoutrements of war, the monument "Peace" depicts an angelic female figure holding an olive branch overhead and staring past the viewer towards a distant vista. Commissioned by the Woman's Relief Corps (WRC) of Ohio, the statue "Peace" honors Ohio men and women's sacrifices and contributions to the Civil War. The WRC originated as an auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), the largest and most influential organization of Union veterans. Bruce Wilder Saville created this monument in 1923, not long after the end of World War I and the passage of the 19th amendment to the U.S. constitution, which granted American women the right to vote. The statue is centrally located on the north side of Capitol Square along Broad Street. |

This photograph was found in the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board's main office in the Ohio Statehouse. The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board took over the care of the Statehouse and its collections in 1988. |
