Letter from Mrs. Cornelia Ranney Stockwell to Ohio Senator, J.H. Miller. The letter is not dated, is two pages long and is on stationary with the address: 2291 Murray Hill Road Cleveland at the top. The letter reads: "Hon. J. Henry Miller - / Dear Sir- / As chairman of the / 20th congressional district, I / wish to express our sincere and / earnest appreciation of all you / did for the women of Ohio / during these last months. / I know we / are much closer to you for the / passage of our suffrage bill, / and I feel as much pride in / the men who marched for our / enfranchisement as I am sure / they do of their share in / the enactment of this democratic / principle. / Please allow me / to personally thank you, / for I was present the day / the bill passed the Senate, and / feel that your speech could / not have been finer. / Thankfully and sincerely yours, / Cornelia Ranney Stockwell / Saturday." On the back of the letter, someone has written: "Suffrage Notes" in pencil. |

Cornelia Ranney Stockwell was born July 6, 1875 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was an active member in the Women's Suffrage movement. She and her daughters planted yellow suffrage gardens, produced community plays, and arrange parades and marches. Jacob Henry Miller was born October 3, 1865 in Licking County, Ohio. Miller was a farmer, teacher, lawyer, minister and member of the Ohio Senate. He received his education at Bethany College, Ohio Northern University, and Pettit College of Law. A democrat, Miller served one term in the Ohio Senate between 1917-1919, and was Senate President Pro Tempore during his term. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta and a supporter of women's suffrage and prohibition. Miller died January 5, 1919 and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Ohio. |

Robert Miller of Michigan donated this letter to the Ohio Statehouse Museum as part of a collection of items related to his grandfather, J. Henry Miller of Newark, Ohio. The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board took over the care of the Statehouse and its collections in 1988. |
