Notes |
The twenty-sixth quadrennial U.S.presidential election was held on Tuesday, November 6, 1888. Grover Cleveland of New York, the incumbent president and a Democrat, attempted to secure a second term against the Republican nominee, Benjamin Harrison, a former U.S. Senator from Indiana. The nation's economy enjoyed prosperity and the nation was at peace, but Cleveland lost re-election in the Electoral College, even though he won a plurality of the popular vote by a narrow margin. Harrison's vice-presidential running mate was Levi P. Morton of New York. As a winner of the 1888 election, Morton served as the twenty-second vice president; he went on to become New York's thirty-first governor, serving from 1895 to 1896. Prior to his vice presidency, he served as the U.S. Minister to France (1881-1885) and represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1879-1881. |
