In 1867, the Ohio General Assembly passed a joint resolution relative to the governors of Ohio. The legislators resolved that "the secretary of state, on the first Monday of January next, whether the portraits of the governors of Ohio, state and territorial, can be procured, and if so, whether original portraits or copies, and the probable expense of procuring such portraits for the governor's office." Charlotte, North Carolina artist John Seibels Walker painted and signed this portrait of Governor Kasich in 2019. The portrait was unveiled at the Ohio Statehouse on December 9, 2019. John R. Kasich served as the 69th governor of Ohio from 2011-2019. He was born on May 13, 1952 in McKees Rock, Pennsylvania. He attended The Ohio State University, where he graduated in 1974 with a degree in political science. As a freshman, he convinced the president of the university to hand carry a letter to President Nixon during a visit. Nixon was so impressed with the letter that he invited Kasich to meet with him at the White House. At the young age of 26, Kasich was elected to the Ohio Senate where he served one term. Immediately following his term in the Ohio Legislature, he ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, and won. He served in Congress as the representative for Ohio's 12th House District until 2001. While in the House, he served four 18 years on the House Armed Services Committee and for 6 years as the Chairman of the House Budget Committee and led the effort to balance the federal budget for the first time since 1969. In 2000, Kasich decided not to run for reelection and instead hosted Heartland with John Kasich on the Fox News Channel and also held the role of managing director of the Lehman Brothers office in Columbus, Ohio. In the 2010 Ohio gubernatorial election, Kasich beat incumbent Ted Strickland and was sworn in as Ohio's 69th governor on January 10, 2011. Four years later he was overwhelmingly re-elected to a second term. In his first inaugural address he called on Ohioans to "come together to make the Buckeye State stronger and more prosperous for all." As governor, Kasich's top priority was to create a jobs-friendly climate to increase opportunity for all Ohioans. Ohio jobs grew by over 557,600 over the course of his time in office. Kasich's innovative strategy to modernize Ohio's infrastructure system led to a record number of new transportation projects. The governor was also a leading voice in promoting bipartisan solutions to health care reform, immigration, and international trade. John Kasich unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for president of the United States in 2000 and 2016. In 2019, he joined CNN as a contributor. Kasich is the author of four New York Times best-sellers: "Courage is Contagious," "Stand for Something: The Battle for America's Soul," "Every Other Monday, and Two Paths: America Divided or United," which reflects on his 2016 presidential campaign and his hopes for America's future. His most recent book, "It's Up to Us: Ten Little Ways We Can Bring About Big Change" was published in 2019. John Kasich lives in Westerville, Ohio with his wife, Karen Waldbillig Kasich, and their twin daughters, Emma and Reese. |
