Notes |
John M. Pittenger was a member of Ohio Historical Society, Great Lakes Historical Society, and Ohioana Library Association. On Page 2, there is the following forward: "This is frankly a book designed for the turnpike traveler, whether he be a resident of Ohio or a visitor to our state. The names of the turnpike plazas provide the framework around which the book is written. / It is intended to provide a happy medium between a road-map or folder which gives the bare bones of the geography of the state and a History of Ohio: which provides more than the reader wants to know, in many cases. / It is somewhat like a fish-net, more holes than substance, bringing the reader a few choice (we hope) things that might have been mentioned had we made the volume larger. / The completion of the Ohio Turnpike in 1955 annually brings many thousand visitors to Ohio and through Ohio, -- visitors who have never seen the Buckeye State before and would like to know something of the background and history of the area." Also on Page 2, there are the following acknowledgements: "Many persons and organizations have helped in the preparation of both the text and the illustrations, too many to mention individually. The cooperation, in providing pictures and checking facts, of the Ohio Turnpike Commission, the Ohio Historical Society, the Great Lakes Historical Association, and the Ohio Development and Publicity Commission deserves a word of special thanks." |
