Notes |
In 1859, a little-known man from Illinois named Abraham Lincoln addressed a gathering of citizens on the east terrace of the contemporary issues of slavery and Union preservation. A bronze plaque in the Statehouse Atrium marks the spot where Lincoln spoke. Ohio Governor William Dennison welcomed president-elect Abraham Lincoln in the Statehouse on February 13, 1861. Lincoln stopped in Columbus on his way to the nation's capital. Greeted by a large crowd, Lincoln spoke to a joint session of the Ohio legislature in the House Chamber, where this portrait originally hung. After his death by assassination in 1865, President Lincoln lay in repose in the Rotunda where thousands of mourners passed by his casket to pay their respects. |
