Page 9 paragraph 1: "On the grounds of the building a large statuary group by Hermon / MacNeil, the William McKinley Monument, honors and remembers / Ohio governor and U.S. president William McKinley. The floor of the / Statehouse rotunda is composed of almost 5,000 individual pieces of / marble, all cut and fitted by hand. The design at the center of the / floor traces the development of the United States: the 13 stones in / the center represent the original colonies; the three rings symbolize / the areas of territory that enlarged the nation; surrounding the rings / is a starburst with 32 points, one for each of the states in the Union / when the floor was laid down; and surrounding the entire design is / a gray band representing the U.S. Constitution." Page 9 paragraph 2: "The Great Seal of Ohio and the state motto, 'With God, all things / are possible,' are engraved at the foot of the steps leading to the / west entrance." Page 9 paragraph 3: "Also in the Rotunda is the Lincoln and Soldiers' Monument by Thomas / Dow Jones. It features one of the few busts of Abraham Lincoln / that we know for certain was created from life. Jones traveled to / Springfield, Illinois in late December 1860 and spent about 6 weeks/ there, working on a clay version of the bust for about an hour a day / (the amount of time Lincoln was willing to allot him as he prepared / speeches and wrote letters). As the best was nearing completion, / Jones asked Lincoln what he thought of it, and Lincoln retorted / with, 'I think it looks very much like the critter [himself].' When / Lincoln needed to leave Springfield in February to begin his journey / to Washington D.C., Jones returned to Ohio with the clay busy / and used it as a model to create the marble one that we see in the / Rotunda today. The 'Lincoln and Soldiers' Monument' was completed / in 1871 and Governor Rutherford B. Hayes considered it one of his / most notable achievements as governor. A collection of the tools / T.D. Jones used as a sculptor can often be seen in one of the wood and / glass cases near the C.S.R.A.B office on the ground floor." Page 9 paragraph 4: "Shortly after completion, Abraham Lincoln was passing through Ohio / on his was to Washington D.C., and it was at the Statehouse where / Lincoln received the official telegram from the Electoral College / that proclaimed him president-elect." Page 9 paragraph 5: "The Ohio Statehouse is currently the only state capitol to display / the original state constitution document(s) for public view. A case in / the Ohio Statehouse Museum displays two original pages of each state / constitution - the first, which was written in 1802, and the current, / which was written in 1851." The back cover shows the ceremony's logo in the center of the page. At the bottom of the page, text reads, "Paid for by the DeWine Husted Inaugural Committee" |
