John Marshall Briley Sr. was born in Monmouth, Illinois, graduated from Monmouth College, and received a law degree from Harvard University. He joined the Manhattan law firm of Shearman & Sterling, and became a partner in 1941. He then served as senior vice president of Owens-Corning Fiberglas of Toledo, Ohio, which he joined in 1952. He became general counsel in 1956 and senior vice president in 1967. In 1962, Briley unsuccessfully ran as the Republican candidate in the U.S. Senate race. He lost the election to Ohio Democrat Frank Lausche. Briley died at the age of 85 in 1990. |
