Telegram sent February 27, 1917 from Harriet Taylor Upton to Ohio Senator, J. Henry Miller. Harriet Taylor Upton was born December 17, 1853 in Ravenna, Ohio. In 1861 the Taylor family moved to Warren, Ohio, Harriet attended Warren public schools. In 1884, she married George W. Upton. Harriet Taylor Upton was a key organizer and the first president of the Suffrage Association of Warren. She was also a member of the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA). In 1894 Upton was elected as the treasurer of the NWSA, and brought the headquarters of the organization to Warren, Ohio where it was located from 1903 to 1910. Upton also served as president of the Ohio Woman Suffrage Association from 1899 to 1908 and again from 1911 to 1920. In 1920 Harriet Taylor Upton was the first woman elected Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Republican National Committee. In June 1924, she stepped down from the position to run for Congress. Upton ran unsuccessfully in the Ohio Republican primary for Ohio's 19th District for the House of Representatives. Throughout her life, Upton participated in a number of other organizations including the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, the Women's Relief Corps, and the Episcopal Church. Upton died November 2, 1945 in Pasadena, California. Jacob Henry Miller was born October 3, 1865 in Licking County, Ohio. Miller was a farmer, teacher, lawyer, minister and member of the Ohio Senate. He received his education at Bethany College, Ohio Northern University, and Pettit College of Law. A democrat, Miller served one term in the Ohio Senate between 1917-1919, and was Senate President Pro Tempore during his term. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta and a supporter of women's suffrage and prohibition. Miller died January 5, 1919 and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Ohio. |
