Notes |
Newly elected legislators formally take office when the Ohio General Assembly convenes on the first Monday in January in odd-numbered years (or on the next day if the first Monday is a legal holiday). At 1:30 p.m. on the first session day of a new General Assembly, the Senate President from the preceding biennium calls the Senate to order. Traditionally, the Senate opens each session with an invocation by a member of the clergy. The President calls the roll of all senatorial districts in numerical order. As they are called, the Senators-elect present their certificates of election, and all Senators then take the oath of office. The next few weeks are usually devoted to electing officers and other Senate officials, adopting rules, and making committee appointments. |
