Letter from the Stark County Woman Suffrage Association to Ohio Senator, J.H. Miller. The letter is dated February 22, 1917, is one page long, and is on yellow stationary that reads: "Stark County Woman Suffrage Association / HEADQUARTERS:-ROOM 30, EAGLE BLOCK / CANTON, OHIO / MISS BLANCHE VIGNOS, PRESIDENT, CANTON / MRS. W.H. ALLMAN 1ST VICE-PRESIDENT, MASSILLON / MRS. ELIZABETH B. MCGREW, SECRETARY, CANTON / MISS MABEL HARTZELL, 2ND VICE-PRESIDENT, ALLIANCE / MRS. HARVEY H. MILLER, TREASURER, LOUISVILLE ROAD" The letter reads: "Feb. 22, 1917 / Hon. J. Henry Miller, / Columbus, O. / My dear Mr. Miller: / Allow me to thank you for the splendid / speech you made for the suffrage Bill in the Senate. / We are fully aware, that without such friends as you, we / would not have won out in this very important Bill. / The women of the 16th District fully appreciate your / work in support of the Suffrage Bill. / Yours very truly, Blanche Vignos / Chairman 16th District." |

Blanche Vignos was born in Canton Ohio, 1870. She was an active participant in the Women's Suffrage movement along with her sister, Alice. Blanche served as the first secretary of the League of Women Voters of the Canton Area. She also served as the president of the Stark County Woman Suffrage Association. Jacob Henry Miller was born October 3, 1865 in Licking County, Ohio. Miller was a farmer, teacher, lawyer, minister and member of the Ohio Senate. He received his education at Bethany College, Ohio Northern University, and Pettit College of Law. A democrat, Miller served one term in the Ohio Senate between 1917-1919, and was Senate President Pro Tempore during his term. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta and a supporter of women's suffrage and prohibition. Miller died January 5, 1919 and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Ohio. |

Robert Miller of Michigan donated this letter to the Ohio Statehouse Museum as part of a collection of items related to his grandfather, J. Henry Miller of Newark, Ohio. The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board took over the care of the Statehouse and its collections in 1988. |
