Newspaper clipping from an unidentified newspaper. The article explains that Ohio Governor James Cox encouraged Senate President Pro Tem J. Henry Miller to take his honeymoon. The article reads: "CUPID TO TAKE / PRECEDENCE OF / LEGISLATION / Governor Cox Tells Senator Miller / to Go Ahead and Get Married / and Take Honeymoon Trip. / CLEVELAND, Feb. 4- State Sena- / tor J.H. Miller of Newark, and his / bride, who was Miss Harriet (sic) Adams / of Cleveland, started south on their / honeymoon today, following their / marriage at Lorain, Saturday. / On his departure, Senator Miller / made public one of the reasons for / the failure of Governor Cox to call a / special session of the legislature. / The senator informed the executive / of his approaching marriage and said / a special session would "put him in / an unfortunate situation." He asked / the governor "Please to be consider- / ate." / The governor replied: / "Go ahead. I will not do any thing / to interfere with any arrangements / you have made with Cupid." |

Jacob Henry Miller was born October 3, 1865 in Licking County, Ohio. Miller was a farmer, teacher, lawyer, minister and member of the Ohio Senate. He received his education at Bethany College, Ohio Northern University, and Pettit College of Law. A democrat, Miller served one term in the Ohio Senate between 1917-1919, and was Senate President Pro Tempore during his term. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta and a supporter of women's suffrage and prohibition. Miller died January 5, 1919 and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Ohio. |

Robert Miller of Michigan donated this wedding invitation to the Ohio Statehouse Museum as part of a collection of items related to his grandfather, J. Henry Miller of Newark, Ohio. The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board took over the care of the Statehouse and its collections in 1988. |
