Letter from the Licking County Equal Suffrage League to Ohio Senator, J.H. Miller. The letter is dated February 21, 1917, is one page long, and is on stationary that reads: "Licking County / Equal Suffrage League / Newark, Ohio." The letter reads: "Hon. J. H. Miller / Dear Sir- / The members of the Licking County Equal Suffrage Associ- / ation have watched with great in- / terest the Reynolds bill which pro- / vides for presidential suffrage for / women. We feel that we are great- / ly indebted to you for the passage / of that bill and take this means / of expressing to you our gratitude. / We wish for you the greatest / success in your official position / and hope that we may sometime have / the opportunity of registering our / approval at the polls. / Respectfully, / Licking County Equal Suffrage League / Mrs. E. Jacob Henry Miller was born October 3, 1865 in Licking County, Ohio. Miller was a farmer, teacher, lawyer, minister and member of the Ohio Senate. He received his education at Bethany College, Ohio Northern University, and Pettit College of Law. A democrat, Miller served one term in the Ohio Senate between 1917-1919, and was Senate President Pro Tempore during his term. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta and a supporter of women's suffrage and prohibition. Miller died January 5, 1919 and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Ohio. |

Robert Miller of Michigan donated this letter to the Ohio Statehouse Museum as part of a collection of items related to his grandfather, J. Henry Miller of Newark, Ohio. The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board took over the care of the Statehouse and its collections in 1988. |
