Notes |
On this 1856 List of Members of the General Assembly of Ohio, State Officers are listed as Salmon P. Chase, Governor; Thomas H. Ford, Lt. Governor; Francis Kimball, Attorney General; Francis M. Wright, Auditor; William H. Gibson, Treasurer; and James A. Baker, Secretary. In the 1851 constitution, a formula was created that would determine the number of legislators each county had - and that number would change over the years based on population. In 1856, here were 42 state senators and 116 state representatives. The Ohio Statehouse was completed in 1861, five years after this list was published, even though an image of the building features prominently at the top of the page. In 1855-1856, the House of Representatives met in Odeon Hall and the Senate in Ambos' Hall. The legislature held its first sessions in the new Ohio Statehouse in 1857 while the building was being completed. |
