Notes |
Philip Henry Sheridan was born on March 6, 1831 in Albany, New York. He served as a U.S. Army Officer and as a Union general during the American Civil War. He quickly rose through the ranks due to his close ties with Ulysses S. Grant. Sheridan's forces were instrumental in Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. After the Civil War, Sheridan was promoted to General of the U.S. Army by President Grover Cleveland. Two months after sending these memoirs to the publisher, Sheridan suffered a series of massive heart attacks. He later died of heart failure on August 5, 1888 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. |
